What is a pre-authorization?
Updated October 7, 2026
The pre-authorization is a real charge that Rentalo makes to the driver's credit card before the trip starts, to cover any unexpected costs related to the rental.
How much is charged?
- A USD $200 charge is made as a security deposit.
- After the trip ends and it is confirmed there were no issues (damage, cleaning, fuel, etc.), USD $190 is refunded automatically.
- The USD $10 withheld covers administrative charges and the payment platform's fee (2.5%) for processing the refund.
How long does the deposit take to come back?
- Once Rentalo releases the refund, the time it takes to appear depends on the driver's bank or payment platform.
- The amount can take 5 to 10 business days to show in the account.
Why is this charge made?
This deposit covers situations such as:
- Late vehicle returns.
- Insufficient fuel.
- Excessive cleaning.
- Unreported fines or minor damage.
Important: if a violation or damage is found, the amount withheld may be adjusted or partly used as appropriate, and the driver will be notified with the reason.
