Fuel policy

Updated October 7, 2026

At Rentalo, making sure the vehicle is returned with the same fuel level it was handed over with is essential to a fair and efficient experience for everyone. That's why we have set clear rules for checking, documenting and charging for any fuel difference.

General rules

  • The driver must return the vehicle with the same fuel level it had at the start of the trip.
  • Both the owner and the driver must take photos of the fuel gauge at check-in (pickup) and check-out (return).
  • The photos must be uploaded correctly in the app using the “Add Photos” feature.

Deadline for reporting differences

  • If the owner notices a difference in the fuel level, they must report it to Rentalo within the first hour after the trip ends.
  • The claim must include clear photos of the fuel gauge taken before and after.
  • Claims made after this deadline will not be processed.

Charges for fuel differences

If the vehicle is returned with less fuel than recorded at the start, the following charges per gallon short will apply:

Fuel typeCost per gallon short
GasolineUSD $6
DieselUSD $5
LPG (liquefied gas)USD $3.50

How the shortfall is determined

There are two ways to calculate the amount to charge:

1. Agreement between the parties

If the driver and owner agree on the difference, the charge will be applied using the amounts in the table above, multiplied by the missing gallons.

2. Assessment by Rentalo

If the parties do not agree, Rentalo will review the photo evidence and determine the estimated shortfall. In that case:

  • The driver will be charged the corresponding amount.
  • 80% of the amount charged will be transferred to the owner, and Rentalo will keep 20% for operations management and transfer costs.

Important considerations

  • Photos must be clear and show the fuel gauge fully.
  • Screenshots, forwarded images or photos taken outside the trip time will not be accepted.
  • Rentalo reserves the right to reject claims without valid evidence or made after the deadline.
